How Much Does a Custom Website Cost?
"How much does a website cost?" is the first question almost everyone asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on what you actually need. A one-page site for a local service business is a completely different project from a booking platform with accounts and payments. Here is a straight breakdown so you can budget realistically.
What actually drives the price
The cost of a website comes down to scope, not a fixed menu. A few things move the number the most:
- Number of pages and sections. A single landing page is quick; a multi-page site with services, a blog, and case studies is more work.
- Custom design vs. a template. A design built specifically for your brand takes more time than dropping content into a pre-made theme, and it is usually worth it.
- Features. Contact forms are simple. Online booking, accounts, e-commerce, or integrations with other software add real engineering time.
- Content. If your copy, photos, and branding are ready, the project moves faster. If they need to be created, that is part of it too.
Rough ranges
Every project is different, but as a general guide for a hand-coded, custom site:
- A simple, polished marketing site (a few pages, custom design, contact form, SEO) is the most common request and the most affordable.
- A larger business site with more pages, a blog, and a few integrations sits in the middle.
- A web app or SaaS with accounts, dashboards, and billing is a bigger build, priced by the features it needs.
The best way to get a real number is a quick conversation about what you are trying to do. There is no charge for that.
One-time cost vs. ongoing cost
Most of the cost is the one-time build. After that, you have small ongoing costs like a domain name (usually around ten to twenty dollars a year) and hosting, which for a fast static site can be free or nearly free. A hand-built site does not lock you into a monthly platform fee the way a website builder does.
Why "cheap" can cost more later
A low monthly template builder feels cheap, but you are renting a slower, generic site on a crowded platform, and those fees never stop. A custom site is a one-time investment you own, built to load fast and rank in search, which is what actually brings in customers. Over a few years, custom is often the better deal.
