Website vs. Web App vs. SaaS: What’s the Difference?

Website, web app, SaaS: the words get thrown around like they mean the same thing, but they are three different things with three different price tags. Knowing which one you actually need saves you time and money. Here is the plain-language version.

A website

A website is mostly there to inform. Think a marketing site, a portfolio, or a local business page: pages of content people read, with a way to contact you or buy something simple. Visitors mostly browse; they do not log in or do much beyond that. If your goal is "look professional and get found," a website is what you need.

A web app

A web app is a website you do things in. Instead of just reading, users log in and interact: a dashboard, a tool, a booking system, a calculator. It has accounts, saves data, and responds to what each user does. If you are replacing a spreadsheet or a manual process with something people use in the browser, that is a web app, and it usually needs a backend behind it.

SaaS

SaaS (software as a service) is a web app that people pay to use, usually on a subscription. It has everything a web app has, plus accounts, billing, and the reliability to serve many customers at once. If your idea is a product other businesses or people sign up and pay for, you are building SaaS.

How to tell which you need

  • Do people mostly read your content and contact you? You need a website.
  • Do people log in and do work inside it? You need a web app.
  • Do people pay to use it on their own accounts? You are building SaaS.

The good news: because all three are built with the same core skills, one developer can take you from a simple site today to a full product later, without starting over.
