Do I Need a Website for My Small Business?
If your business lives on Instagram or a Facebook page, you might wonder whether you really need a website too. In almost every case, the answer is yes. Here is why, and what even a simple site does for you.
People check Google first
When someone hears about your business, the first thing they usually do is search your name. If nothing comes up, or only a half-finished social page does, you look smaller and less trustworthy than you are. A website is how you show up, on your terms.
What a social page can't do
- You don't own it. The platform can change the rules, limit your reach, or disappear. Your website is yours.
- You can't really rank. A Facebook page will not rank for the services you offer the way a real website can.
- Limited control. You are stuck with the platform's layout, and your page looks like every other page on it.
- It gets buried. Social posts vanish down a feed. A website is always there, working for you.
What even a simple site gets you
You do not need anything huge. A clean, fast one or two page site gives you a professional home base, a place to be found on Google, and a clear way for people to contact you or buy. It makes you look established, and it keeps working while you sleep.
The bottom line
Social media is great for reach, but it is rented ground. A website is the one piece of your online presence you actually own, and for most small businesses it pays for itself the first time a customer finds you through Google.
