Website Creator vs. Web Designer: Which Do You Need?

A website creator is a tool you use to build a site yourself; a web designer is a person who builds it for you. The tool is cheaper up front and puts every decision and every hour of work on you, while the designer costs more and takes the whole job off your plate. The right choice comes down to your time, your budget, and how much the site actually matters to your revenue.

I build websites for a living, so I clearly have a horse in this race. But I will be straight with you about when you do not need someone like me, because plenty of people don't.

What website creators do well

Site builders like Wix, Squarespace, and GoDaddy's website maker are genuinely good at one thing: getting something online today with zero technical skill. You pick a template, drag some blocks around, type your text, and you are live. Hosting is included, nothing to install, nothing to configure.

For a hobby site, a personal page, a club, a one-off event, or an idea you just want to test, that is exactly the right amount of website. If your site only needs to exist, so people who already know you can find your hours and your phone number, a builder does the job and I would not talk you out of it.

Where a website creator costs you later

The catch is that "cheap and easy" describes day one, not year two. Here is where the DIY route quietly gets expensive:

• Your time. The tool is easy; the job is not. Learning the editor, wrestling the template, writing every word, and redoing sections that never look quite right adds up to a lot of evenings. Whatever your time is worth, that is part of the price.
• Sameness. Templates are used by enormous numbers of businesses. A site that looks like everyone else's makes it harder to look like the obvious choice.
• Speed and SEO limits. Builders ship a lot of code you did not ask for, and you can only optimize what the platform lets you touch. That matters because speed affects both rankings and whether visitors stay.
• Fees that never end. You are renting the site. Stop paying and it disappears, and you cannot take it with you to another platform.

What a web designer does that a tool can't

A tool gives you blocks. A designer gives you judgment. When I build a site, the template-filling part is the smallest piece of the work. The real job is listening to how your business actually gets customers, deciding what goes on the page and in what order, writing structure that search engines understand, cutting everything that slows the page down, and shaping the whole thing so a visitor knows what to do next. A tool cannot ask you questions, and it cannot tell you no.

A designer is also accountable. When something breaks or needs changing, you call a person who knows your site, not a help center. I wrote about what separates a site that works from one that just exists in What Makes a Good Website?, and almost everything on that list is judgment, not software.

How to decide

Here is the honest checklist I would give a friend:

• Use a website creator if the site is for a hobby or personal project, no real money depends on it, you enjoy tinkering, and your budget is genuinely tiny.
• Use a website creator if you just need a placeholder this week and you accept you may rebuild properly later.
• Hire a web designer if customers find you or judge you through your site, and every lost visitor is lost revenue.
• Hire a web designer if you need to rank on Google against competitors who are also trying to rank.
• Hire a web designer if your evenings are better spent running your business than fighting a page editor.

If you read that list and the tool column fits, use the tool. No hard feelings.

A website creator is the right choice when the site just needs to exist. A web designer is the right choice when the site needs to perform. Be honest about which one you are building, and about what your own hours are worth, and the decision usually makes itself.
